At 4:30pm today, it is estimated about 250 people came to the 65th Birthday Ice Cream Social and Business Meeting with special entertainment. Thanks to generous donations by Access Medicine, Ovid and Rittenhouse, people also enjoyed frozen yogurt instead of ice cream, assorted toppings, fresh fruit and birthday cake.
The Scroll of Exemplary Service of 220 names of members that have made a difference from 2002-2013 was proudly displayed. Awards for Publication and Leadership, plus our Rising Star Award that is accompanied with a free year’s membership to the Leadership & Management Section were given out. Outgoing Chair, Claire Joseph received an award as a token of our deep appreciation for her leadership this past year. All attendees received an HLS 65th BDay pin as a special present. I have more and would be glad to give you one. The Wrap program collected lovely handcrafted blankets and children’s books, that will be delivered to the Boston Ronald McDonald House.
Also, at the Ice Cream Social, Sheila Hayes, from Hartford Hospital, and her thespian librarian and nurse colleagues performed 2 short plays about MRSA Infection Control, Lateral Violence (Bullying) and 2 vignettes from their HIPPA Soap Opera. As they made costume changes the group explained how their group came to be, their performance record and how they have witnessed the effectiveness of “acting out” behaviors to foster meaningful discussions. Sheila and her colleagues have published in the Journal of Hospital Librarianship and the HIPPA Soap will soon be in print.
We missed Ysabel Bertolucci at the Party today. As you know, Ysabel was a Kaiser Permanente Hospital Librarian. I personally cherished her longtime friendship. At Section Council Saturday, Judy Burnham told us the MLA Board has endorsed the establishment of an Ysabel Bertolucci Annual Meeting Scholarship Grant to award up to $1000 to someone with an interest in either nursing information, hospital librarianship, international cooperation or consumer health information. If you want to contribute to the $20,000 needed to endow this Grant Fund, you may do so at the MLA Scholarship Booth in the rear of the Exhibit Hall. Please consider giving what you can to this effort.
